A Greencastle woman is frustrated with what she calls is a lack of safety by motorists in a neighborhood near Greencastle's Robe Ann Park.
Jessica Draper told The Putnam County Post and GIANT fm News the situation has become so dangerous, she no longer allows her son to play in the front yard and construction along Washington Street only exacerbated the issues when traffic was rerouted through the area.
"I live in one of the small neighborhoods by the park, and I see this crap every day throughout the day. People fly right by," Draper said.
Draper has started a petition at change.org where she is soliciting signatures from residents who are looking for a change. The petition calls for the immediate addition of speed bumps in the neighborhood.
"I would like to see drivers slow down and be more cautious. I would hate for any of the kids and pedestrians to get hit all because somebody was driving like an idiot on on a small, narrow street. The safety of our residents, particularly our children, is at stake. Excessive speed on these residential streets poses an ongoing threat. Speeding vehicles make it difficult for pedestrians to cross the street safety and increases the risk of devastating accidents. Without effective traffic controls, this neighborhood will continue to face unacceptable dangers," she said.
Draper said she has contacted the Greencastle Police Department about her concerns, and they have patrolled the area previously and caught a few offenders.
"I haven't seen one at all lately patrolling or hiding out," Draper said.
