The Illinois State Police (ISP) have unveiled their latest effort to reduce crime and protect the public.

The new Bicycle Response Team has been deployed at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield for the 2026 edition of the State Fair. The team was created to increase operational mobility, visibility, and service during events where traditional patrol vehicles are less effective due to large crowds such as fairs, festivals, and parades. They will also allow troopers to reach hard-to-get to areas more quickly and increase crowd management capabilities.

The specially trained officers from around the state will continue to work their normal patrol duties in their squad cars throughout the year but will be available for duty as bicycle operators are needed. Before being assigned, the bicycle officers must complete a rigorous operator training program and be specially trained in crowd management and control tactics.

The ISP plans to have approximately 100 trained bicycle operators in the voluntary program.
