Potawatomi Wildlife Park recently held its 31st Annual Fishing Derby, a cherished tradition for the local community. T
he event is the park’s only public fishing opportunity outside of educational purposes, with Pond 5 drawing anglers of all ages excited for a day of fishing, memory-making, and the chance to win prizes. Thanks to a generous anonymous donor, over $1,000 in prizes were awarded, aimed at encouraging youth participation in the sport.
The day began with eager families registering before the 11:00 AM deadline. Familiar faces returned early to claim their favorite fishing spots, with the competition running from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Participants enjoyed free concessions, including hotdogs, smash burgers, chips, and sodas made possible by the same generous donor.
At 12:15 PM, awards were presented to winners across five fish categories—panfish, bass, catfish, rough fish—and, new this year, an award for the smallest catch for the youngest age group (0-9). Age groups ranged from 0-9, 10-16, and 17+, ensuring every participant had an opportunity to win. A special surprise awaited all children under 16, who were each gifted their choice of a tackle box, fishing pole, or tackle box add-on kit, making the event even more memorable.
“What a great day. Love this,” said William Gains, a regular attendee who attended with his grandchildren. Another participant, Kevin Kersey, added, “Your entire staff did a fantastic job putting this together.”
The success of the event was made possible by the dedication of volunteers and sponsors, reinforcing Potawatomi Wildlife Park’s mission to connect people with nature and community.
Established in 1979 by the visionary Vernon Romine, Potawatomi Wildlife Park spans over 300 acres and offers year-round opportunities for low-impact recreation, education, and connection to local history. The park is open from sunrise to sunset, offering a serene escape for all ages.
