With a pair of meetings about the matter in the rearview, Vermillion County officials have made it official -- the county will move to vote centers for future elections.
The decision came on the heels of the Vermillion County Commissioners acting on a request from Clerk Tami Lowry and approving a resolution to change from precinct based polling places to vote centers.
"We will be a vote center county for next year's election," Lowry told The Parke County Post.
Lowry mentioned the transition had been discussed for years between her office and the Election Board.
"There are 92 counties in Indiana and 65 are vote centers. We are just catching up. We want to go to the vote centers before the state makes everyone go to them," Lowry said.
Lowry mentioned she has a letter that will be sent to every registered voter explaining the change, the benefits and important deadlines to make sure voters can vote in upcoming elections.
"Many have worked so hard and in a bipartisan manner to move the county towards vote centers. Vermillion County should be proud of its community leaders who work together for what will be best for all citizens," Lowry wrote.
With the transition, Vermillion County will see a savings on locations, as well as workers who work on election day.
"The county will save on locations and the amount of people we use. Just with these two, we will save over $6,800 twice a year. We have all the equipment that we need, so there would not be any expenses for that," Lowry said.
Lowry said her office has used 70 people to work and utilized 14 voting locations in the past. With the move to vote centers, there will now be 35 employees and seven locations.
"We will also have a savings on food that is purchased for each poll worker. We give about 30 dollars for the day in food, so we will also save another $1,050. These are just a few of the areas we will be saving on with vote centers," Lowry said.
The vote center locations in 2026 are as follow:
Highland American Legion, 197 E. Adams St., Perrysville
Cayuga American Legion, 922 W. Ferry St., Cayuga
Dana Firehouse, 160 N. Maple St., Dana
Clinton Firehouse, 332 Mulberry St., Clinton
Fairview Town Hall, 430 3rd St., Clinton
Newport Lions Club, 240 S. Main St., Newport
Wayside Church, 14895 S. 200 E., Clinton
In addition, satellite voting locations will be utilized on two Saturdays and those locations are:
Courthouse, 255 S. Main St., Newport
Clinton Public Library, 313 S. 4th St., Clinton
Highland American Legion, 197 E. Adams St., Perrysville
