The Plymouth Volunteer Fire Department is stepping up to support one of the city's own by hosting a benefit Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, May 23rd, for Plymouth Street Superintendent Jim Marquardt, who is currently awaiting a life-saving liver transplant.
Marquardt was unexpectedly admitted to IU Health Medical Center in Indianapolis last week following a consultation regarding his condition. For many months, he has been battling non-alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver, which has progressed to the point where doctors determined a full liver transplant is necessary.
According to the Mayo Clinic, non-alcoholic cirrhosis involves advanced liver scarring caused by conditions other than alcohol consumption, most commonly Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease. This condition is often driven by metabolic factors where fat buildup causes inflammation and severe scarring.
Marquardt has successfully completed the rigorous medical testing required to ensure he is a viable candidate for the transplant procedure. Having passed all necessary medical evaluations, he is currently waiting for final approval from his insurance provider.
To help alleviate the financial burden on Jim and his wife, Dar, during this challenging time, members of the Plymouth Volunteer Fire Department will be serving up a hot meal for the community. The benefit Pancake Breakfast will run from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the firehouse, located at 111 North Center Street in Plymouth.
The community is warmly invited to attend and show their support for the Marquardt family. A free-will donation will be accepted for the breakfast, with all proceeds going directly to help Jim and Dar navigate the costs associated with his medical care and recovery.
