Unemployment rates across southeastern Illinois remained higher in May of this year than they were one year ago, as a continued result of the effects of the Champion Laboratories plant in Albion earlier in 2026.
According to figures released by the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES), Lawrence County's jobless rate increased from 3.8% in 2025 to 4.7% in 2026. Neighboring Wabash County saw an increase from 3.3% in 2025 to 4.8% in 2026, Richland County climbed from 3.2% in 2025 to 4% in 2026. Despite that increase, Richland County tied with Hamilton and Williamson Counties for the lowest May rates in southern Illinois. Edwards County had the highest unemployment rate in southern Illinois in May at 9.6%, up substantially from 3.7% from May of 2026.
The IDES also reported that the Olney-Mount Carmel labor market experienced a decline in employment during the period with total nonfarm payrolls falling by 1000 jobs compared to 2025. Manufacturing experienced the largest decline, losing 675 jobs over the past year.
