After hearing about the opportunity for several inches of snow, it arrived this past weekend in Putnam County.
According to David Costin, Putnam County Emergency Management Director, Putnam County received almost eight inches of snow by early Monday morning.
The snow brought minor traffic incidents throughout the county, according to Costin. Costin told The Putnam County Post there were 13 crashes and nine slideoffs as a result of the weather system, which also brought the challenge of heavy drift on east to west roads as heavy winds brought havoc Sunday night and early Monday morning.
"This morning we had moments where we weren't sure we were making any progress," Costin said of the snow removal Monday.
Costin said residents did a good job of adhering to requests to stay off the roads, allowing the Putnam County Highway Department to clear the roads.
"We really appreciate citizens staying off the roads as much as they have," Costin said.
The snow was an issue across the Putnamville Indiana State Police Post area, which includes six counties in the district. According to Sgt. Matt Ames, the Putnamville Post had 12 motorist assists, 10 slideoffs, 11 property damage accidents and four personal injury crashes, all of which were deemed "minor."
In addition to issues with roads, the snow also snarled the return to school for Putnam County students, as all four school districts in the county canceled classes for both Monday and Tuesday.
