Two drivers arrested on reckless driving charges along U.S. 30

Two motorists were arrested last Monday on reckless driving charges in separate incidents along U.S. 30, including one suspected of driving under the influence and another who nearly struck an officer conducting a traffic stop.

Officer Baker with the Plymouth Police Department conducted a traffic stop Monday afternoon on U.S. 30 at Pioneer Drive after clocking a vehicle traveling 82 mph in a posted 50 mph zone—32 mph over the speed limit.

The driver, Sean McCormack, 56, of Fort Wayne, was suspected of being under the influence during contact with the officer. McCormack subsequently failed a Standardized Field Sobriety Test.

He was taken into custody and transported to the Marshall County Jail, where he was booked on preliminary charges of operating while intoxicated on a controlled substance and reckless driving.

In a separate incident Monday evening at 11:35 p.m., Officer Wallace was conducting a traffic stop on U.S. 30 near the Michigan Street exit when an oncoming vehicle failed to slow down and change lanes, nearly striking the officer.

A second Plymouth Police officer stopped the vehicle near the Oak Drive intersection on U.S. 30.

The driver, Cardoso Alexandre, 27, of Chicago, was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Marshall County Jail. He was booked on a preliminary charge of reckless driving.

The near-miss incident highlights the importance of Indiana's Move Over Law, which requires drivers to move to a non-adjacent lane or slow down when approaching emergency vehicles, police vehicles, or highway maintenance vehicles stopped on the roadside with lights activated.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Charges mentioned are allegations, and defendants have the right to legal representation and a trial.
