The Illinois State Police are reminding parents and caregivers that properly securing children in the correct car seat, booster seat, or seat belt is one of the most important steps to be taken to protect a child or children in a vehicle.
September 21st through the 27th, 2026 is Child Passenger Safety Week across the state of Illinois. State law requires children under the age of eight to be properly secured in the appropriate child restraint system while traveling. Children under the age of two must ride in a properly fitted rear-facing restraint device unless they weigh forty pounds or more or are forty inches or taller. However, it is advised to keep children rear-facing for as long as permitted depending on the height and weight limits of their car seat.
Recent traffic accidents in early September of this year had tragic, fatal consequences in Illinois after investigation revealed that the children involved were not properly restrained.
