Governor Braun proclaims Indiana Rail Safety Week September 21-27

Indiana Operation Lifesaver (INOL), the Indiana State Police and rail safety partners across the state will recognize Indiana Rail Safety Week, Sept. 21-27, 2026, with expanded education, outreach and enforcement activities marking the 15th anniversary of Indiana's Rail Safety Week initiative.

Governor Mike Braun has proclaimed Sept. 21-27 Indiana Rail Safety Week, highlighting the importance of rail safety education and the shared effort to prevent collisions, injuries and fatalities on and around railroad tracks. This year also marks the 10th anniversary of Operation Lifesaver's national See Tracks? Think Train! Week.

Every three hours in the United States, a person or vehicle is hit by a train, and more than 60% of vehicle-train collisions occur at crossings equipped with active warning devices such as lights and/or gates. The statistics reinforce the need for drivers and pedestrians to stay alert and obey warning devices.

“Fifteen years of Indiana Rail Safety Week gives us a lot to celebrate, but our mission remains just as important today,” said Jessica Feder, Executive Director of Indiana Operation Lifesaver. “This year we are expanding our efforts across the state with volunteers, law enforcement, railroads and community partners. Our goal is to give people the information they need to make safe decisions around tracks and trains and prevent tragedies before they happen.”

Throughout the week, Indiana Operation Lifesaver, Indiana State Police, local law enforcement, first responders, railroad partners and volunteers will participate in events and educational activities across Indiana. Outreach will focus on crossing safety, trespass prevention, professional driver education and safe behavior around tracks and trains.

Operation Clear Track on Tuesday, Sept. 22 will bring additional law enforcement attention to crossing-safety and anti-trespass laws. Indiana Operation Lifesaver extends special thanks to CSX, CN, Pinsly Railroad Company and Indiana Rail Road for providing additional support for this year's anniversary campaign, along with all railroads, law enforcement, transportation, government, volunteer and community partners supporting Rail Safety Week activities across the state.
