The Shelbyville Police Department Crisis Intervention Unit obtained a search warrant for firearms believed to be in the possession of Daniel Puckett, located at 213 E. Washington Street.
The search warrant was issued by the Shelby County Circuit Court under Indiana’s Red Flag and executed Friday morning.
According to Shelbyville Police Puckett has a documented history of mental health concerns and has had prior contact with multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Indiana Gaming Commission Police, and the Shelbyville Police Department.
The Shelbyville Police Department deployed its SWAT Team along with the Shelby County Negotiations Team to safely resolve the situation. Officers established contact with Puckett and made repeated attempts over approximately two hours to have him exit the residence voluntarily. Those efforts were unsuccessful.
Based on the totality of the circumstances, it was determined that the safest course of action was to enter the apartment and detain Puckett. The SWAT Team deployed a distraction device and safely entered the residence, taking Puckett into custody without incident. No injuries were reported during the incident.
Following the detention, officers executed the search warrant and located a loaded handgun, a loaded rifle, and additional ammunition. The handgun was found within close proximity to a window Mr. Puckett had been using to communicate with officers.
Puckett was transported to Major Hospital, where he will receive a mental health evaluation and treatment. This incident was safely resolved through the coordinated efforts of all responding units.
The Shelbyville Police Department would like to thank all officers involved in this incident, along with the Shelby County Prosecutor’s Office and the Shelbyville Fire Department, for their assistance and coordination. We would also like to extend our appreciation to the residents of the apartment complex for their cooperation, patience, and understanding throughout this incident.
