The Plymouth Police Department was busy Sunday afternoon, making a drug arrest around 4:30 PM.
Officers of the department were flagged down by a male, who reported to the officers of a van at the Super 8 Motel on Oak Drive. The male told officers the van had numerous people inside, parked by trees with the passengers supposedly smoking marijuana.
In the news release, Officer Fisher reported that as officers approached the area, they received a strong odor of marijuana from the vehicle. It was then discovered that the driver of the vehicle was 33-year-old Edward Torrez of Montgomery, Illinois. While searching the vehicle, officers found nearly 30 grams of marijuana, over 7 grams of cocaine, a scale, and drug paraphernalia, all of which Torrez admitted belonged to him.
After the vehicle search, Torrez was brought to Marshall County Jail, where he was booked around 5:15 in the afternoon. Torrez was booked for possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana, and possession of paraphernalia. He received a court date and cash bond, which was paid. He was released on bond around 9:40 that same night.
Readers are reminded that charging information supported by an affidavit of probable cause is a mere allegation that a crime has been committed and that there is only probable cause to believe a crime has been committed. They are presumed innocent throughout the proceedings and are entitled to be represented by counsel and entitled to a trial by jury at which the State is obligated to provide proof beyond a reasonable doubt before a judgment of guilt may be made.
