The Fulton County Purdue Extension Office is offering practical strategies to help older adults reduce their risk of falling.
Falls can result in serious injuries like hip fractures and head injuries, and can also trigger fear and reduced activity levels. They also are the leading cause of injury death for adults aged 65 and older.
To address this significant health concern among older adults, the extension office hosts A Matter of Balance, an award-winning program designed to increase activity levels and reduce the fear of falling.
Participants will learn to view falls as controllable, set goals for increasing activity and make changes to reduce fall risks at home, as well as exercises to increase strength and balance.
Anyone concerned about falls, those who have fallen in the past or those who have restricted activities because of falling concerns are encouraged to attend.
The program is free, with classes held from 9-10 a.m. Tuesdays and Fridays in the Community Building at the Fulton County Fairgrounds. Dates are May 27 and 30, June 3, 6, 10, 13, 17 and 20. Space is limited to 12 participants.
Preregistration is required by May 23 and can be completed by calling the office at 574-223-3397 or visiting https://cvent.me/8MgGxv.
