The Indiana State Police are aware of and are currently investigating multiple instances of “swatting,” a crime in which callers falsely report a crime or emergency, which have recently targeted members of the Indiana General Assembly.
Swatting is an incident in which someone with malicious intent reports a false emergency at a targeted location via phone, email, or other communication methods. The goal is to provoke the most significant possible law enforcement response.
The Indiana State Police warns that this activity is not only potentially dangerous for everyone involved but also illegal. While the reasons for this behavior may differ, they are actively working with local, county, and federal law enforcement partners to identify those responsible for these reckless, careless, and unlawful actions.
The Indiana State Police aim to pursue criminal prosecution against those involved to the fullest extent allowed by law.
The public can also be a significant asset by contacting the Indiana State Police at iifc@iifc.in.gov with any information they have that may lead to the identification of those responsible. If you see or know something…say something.
