Shelbyville, Morristown produce track and field sectional champions

Shelbyville's girls track and field team competed at the Franklin Sectional Tuesday and Wednesday due to inclement weather.

Shelbyville’s Sonora O’Connor and Morristown’s Brooklyn Carlton qualified for three regional track and field events Wednesday in the conclusion of the sectionals held at Franklin and Batesville, respectively.

Inclement weather forced the postponement of Tuesday’s sectionals around much of central Indiana.

O’Connor finished runner-up in both hurdling events and was part of Shelbyville’s winning 1,600 relay team.

Similarly, Carlton qualified out of both hurdling events and was part of Morristown’s 1,600 relay team that advanced with a new school record time.

At Franklin, Shelbyville closed out the track portion of the schedule Wednesday with a win in the 1,600 relay. Jordyn Noe, Alyna Castanon, Macey Robbins and O’Connor crossed the finish line in 4:10.93. O’Connor was in third place when she took the baton from Robbins and passed the leaders on the backstretch before racing home for the win.

O’Connor finished second in the 100 hurdles in 15.37 and 300 hurdles in 46.66. Both times were personal bests for O’Connor.

Also advancing to the regional from Shelbyville is Macey Robbins. She was runner-up in the 800 (personal best time of 2:23.85).

Triton Central’s Ryn West also advanced to the regional with a third-place finish in the 300 hurdles (49.69).

Shelbyville’s 400 relay team of Mary O’Connor, Diana Gasca, Wuraola Ogunmoyela, and Amara Lewis finished fourth in 52.09.

Other top five finishes from the Franklin Sectional included Noe in the 100 hurdles (fifth in 16.28) and high jump (fifth in 4-10), Waldron’s Maleah Williams in the discus (fifth at 122-7) and shot put (fourth at 39-10), Triton Central’s 400 relay team (fifth at 52.65) and Shelbyville’s 3,200 relay team (fifth at 10:24.57).

Shelbyville’s 3,200 relay team of America Leon-Torres, Castanon, Aerin Garcia-Santiago and Robbins were added to the regional field along with the Golden Bears’ 400 relay team.

Noe also was added to the 100 hurdles regional lineup.

Williams’ distances in the shot put and discus could get her added to the regional field as well.

At the Batesville Sectional, Carlton won the 300 hurdles in 48.03 and was runner-up in the 100 hurdles (16.51) to her own teammate, Sawyer Rogers.

Rogers set a new school record while winning the 100 hurdles in 16.09.

Carlton teamed with Ava Smith, Chloe Theobald, and Anita Gesuale to break Morristown’s record in the 1,600 relay. The Yellow Jackets finished third in 4:17.41 to qualify for regional competition.

Carlton also placed fourth in the high jump (4-10).

Those advancing from the Franklin Sectional will compete in the Ben Davis Regional Tuesday.

Morristown’s regional qualifiers will compete Tuesday in the Greenfield-Central Regional.

The top three finishers in each regional event qualify for the IHSAA Girls Track and Field State Championships on June 5 at Indianapolis North Central High School.
