A friendly new monster has taken up residence on the sidewalk at Unnecessary Extras, 725 and 723 Main St, in downtown Rochester, and he's growing – one painted rock at a time.
Owner of Unnecessary Extras and organizer of the project, Lisa Fellers, says Manny the Manitou Monster was created as a way to spark creativity, celebrate local history and bring the community together through art.
Manny is part sidewalk serpent and part community collaboration. Inspired by the Potawatomi legends and local lore, Manny represents more than just fun – he's a symbol of community pride and participation. Residents and visitors are invited to bring their own hand-painted rocks to add to Manny's colorful body, helping him stretch further and further down the block. From tiny tots to seasoned artists, everyone is welcome to contribute.
"Manny is a way to make art accessible and interactive," Fellers said. "I wanted to create something that anyone could be a part of, whether you're a lifelong resident or just passing through."
The goal? To turn Unnecessary Extras' ordinary sidewalk into an extraordinary story told one painted rock at a time. Fellers says Manny is already drawing smiles, photos and lots of love. She invites the community to grab a rock and a paintbrush and come be a part of this growing community art experience. Participants and community members can follow along or share their own photos using #MannyTheManitouMonster, #RockTheSidewalk and #RochesterIN.
