The National Weather Service (NWS) has released confirmation of two EF-1 tornadoes touching down in Lawrence County (IL) during the severe weather outbreak on Sunday, June 21st. They were two of a total of 13 confirmed in the region.
One occurred in northern Lawrence County west of Birds at 5:25 p.m.CDT. It traveled about 4.5 miles to the east and northeast before dissipating 2 miles north of Birds in southern Crawford County at 5:35 p.m. It had estimated peak winds of 100 mph and was 300 yards wide. During its time on the ground, it produced primarily tree damage.
The second developed in neighboring Richland County about 2 miles southeast of Claremont at 5:53 p.m. CDT. It then traveled east and moved into southwestern Lawrence County 3 miles south-southwest of Sumner. It had peak winds of 95 mph and covered a little more than 3 miles with a width of 300 yards before lifting just after 6 p.m. southeast of Hadley. It also produced mostly tree damages on farmland.
There were no injuries or fatalities from either tornado. As of Monday, June 22nd, the NWS had confirmed a record 196 tornadoes in Illinois. The previous record was 142 back in 2024.
