Speed limit increase coming next month to I-465 in Indianapolis

Starting in July, the speed limit on the majority of I-465 in Indianapolis will increase from 55 to 65 mph following passage of House Enrolled Act 1461 during the 2025 legislative session.

New speed limit signs will be installed around most of the I-465 loop starting on or after July 1.

Minimal traffic impacts are anticipated during installation, with daytime shoulder closures expected. Installation is scheduled to take approximately one week, weather permitting.

Once signs are installed, the speed limit will increase to 65 mph on the majority of I-465, with some exceptions due to existing construction or design limitations.

Installation in the upcoming Level Up 31 and ongoing Clear Path I-465/I-69 work zones will occur following construction. Work zone speed limits will continue until construction is complete.
Variable speed limits will remain in place between I-70 and I-65 on the southeast side of Indianapolis. Speed limits will increase or decrease by five miles per hour based upon travel conditions. The maximum speed limit will be 65 mph.
The speed limit will remain 55 mph between 86th Street and 96th Street on the northwest side of Indianapolis due to existing roadway design.

The geometric design of I-465 accounts for a speed limit of 65 mph with the exception of the northwest corner where the interstate travels through the interchange with I-865. The interchange area is designed for speeds of 55 mph.

Drivers should watch for active crews completing sign installation work in early July. All work is weather-dependent, and schedules are subject to change.
