Democratic candidate Chuck Spears is running for Putnam County Council District 1 to give voters a choice this election season.
Spears faces Republican incumbent Wayne Huffman for the seat.
"I grew up on the west side of Indianapolis. My wife, Tammy, and I moved to Plainfield, where we lived for 25 years and raised two children that graduated from Plainfield High School. We now reside at Heritage Lake, having lived there for the past nine years and enjoy time spent with our four grandkids. I currently work at Allison Transmission and have been a member in good standing of United Auto Workers Local 933, where I am currently serving in my second term on the Election Committee," Spears told The Putnam County Post.
Spears said Putnam County is special in his view because of what it offers.
"Agriculture provides food security, which is vital for existing, as well as creating jobs. Educational opportunities are available through the libraries in the county and DePauw University offerings. Recreation opportunities at Glenn Flint lake and many trails and parks enhance the allure. Greencastle offers First Fridays throughout the summer, showcasing the best of downtown life in Putnam County," he said.
As for why he opted to run for office, Spears admits he does not believe uncontested elections promote democracy.
"People that are informed voters want choices in their elections. I believe in accessibility, transparency and accountability. I believe in fiscal responsibility and I care how our tax dollars are spent. I’ll prioritize people and believe that neighbors should protect our neighbors," Spears said.
Spears said Putnam County faces several challenges, including socioeconomic factors.
He cited an estimated 20 percent increase in homelessness, neglected mental health assistance and substance abuse issues as primary issues, along with Putnam County's median household income being below the state average.
"People are struggling and my goal is to make decisions to benefit the common good. SEA1 is a tax reform law passed in 2025 spearheaded by Republicans in the Indiana State Senate. While overhauling the property tax and local income tax structures, ramifications are to be determined. It provides tax relief in the form of homestead credits, farmland adjustments and business savings. The worry is how it will affect already strapped school budgets as well as municipal and local services," he said.
When asked why people should vote for him, Spears said he will put people first.
"I ask for your vote because I’ll provide a fresh set of eyes and offer the viewpoint of an outsider—a Democrat on Putnam County’s Council. I support property owner's rights and will act with the best interest of all Putnam County residents in mind," Spears said.
