The National Storm Prediction Center in Norman Oklahoma this week issued its preliminary tornado information for southern Illinois for the past year of 2025.

It indicates that the region experienced over 20 twisters over the year. More than six of those were rated as EF-2 or higher with regard to wind speeds and overall intensity.

Nationally, Illinois had the second greatest number of tornadoes during the year trailing only the state of Texas with 141 reported.

The second strongest tornado registered in the U.S. in 2025 by wind velocity occurred in southern Illinois when an EF-4 tornado touched down in the Marion area in May.

Despite a near record-breaking year for tornadic activity, remarkably there were no tornado-related fatalities in the region.

In a related note, January 7th of 1989 was the date of an EF-4 tornado that tore through the town of Allendale in neighboring Wabash County and crossed the Wabash River into Knox County, Indiana. There were several injuries and extensive damage, but no one died.
