The Illinois Supreme Court's Commission to Access to Justice (ATJ) is partnering with the Second Judicial Circuit of Illinois and the Land of Lincoln Legal Aid, Inc. to launch a two-year pilot program for remote court appearances.
Land of Lincoln Legal Aid provides free legal services to low-income and senior residents in central and southern Illinois. Attorneys from the organization will make appearances from remote locations before Second Circuit Judges for select cases as part of the program. Those involved will then provide information to the ATJ Commission, who will then evaluate the impact and usefulness of the proceedings. The commission will study the impact of the remote appearances and see if they can serve to reduce barriers that rural communities experience in accessing justice through the legal system.
The Second Judicial Circuit includes Lawrence, Richland, Wabash, Crawford and eight other counties in southeastern Illinois.
