The American Red Cross is calling for more volunteers across Indiana as the organization responds to nearly twice as many disasters as it did a decade ago.

The Indiana Region currently relies on approximately 4,200 volunteers spanning multiple generations, from Gen Z members participating through nearly 20 Red Cross Clubs at universities and high schools to older generations with decades of service.

Home fires—the nation's most frequent disaster—along with severe storms and other emergencies, have significantly increased the demand for trained volunteers ready to respond at a moment's notice.

"Communities rely on a dedicated volunteer network ready to respond when help can't wait," Red Cross officials said in announcing the volunteer recruitment drive during Red Cross Month this March.

The organization has identified four critical volunteer roles across Indiana:

Disaster Action Team (DAT), which supports families after home fires or emergencies by providing emotional care, emergency financial assistance, and recovery information.

Shelter Volunteers who assist residents in emergency shelters by helping meet immediate needs and connecting them with resources.

Blood Donor Ambassadors who guide donors at blood drives, assist with registration, and provide support, along with

the Blood Transportation Specialists that deliver blood products from Red Cross facilities to hospitals.

The Red Cross emphasizes that volunteers of all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels are welcome. Free online training is provided for all positions.
