Recycle Depot to undergo first renovation since 2004

The Marshall County Recycle Depot is undergoing its first major renovation since the facility was built in 2004, a project expected to enhance safety and security for both staff and visitors.

Construction began this month for improvements that include enclosing the staff office area at the south end of the building, adding a mezzanine storage area, and installing a permanent wall to separate the chemical collection area from public access areas.

The renovations are designed to improve safety by creating a clear separation between areas where the public is welcome and areas where staff sort chemicals, batteries, and e-waste.

"This area also contains equipment and other hazards that the general public may not be aware of, and we don't want anyone to get hurt," depot officials stated.

The enclosed office area will provide security for technology, employees' personal belongings, and financial materials. It will also give staff a secure place to take breaks, have lunch, and shelter during extreme weather.

The $51,000 project is funded through the depot's 2026 budget under capital expenses and was approved by the district board.

England Construction of Culver is handling the renovation work. The project is expected to be completed by mid-February.

The Recycle Depot will remain open during construction, though visitors may experience some temporary changes.

The Swap Shop will stay accessible, though it may close temporarily on certain days due to construction activities. Residents can still drop off paint, batteries, chemicals, and other materials, though they may be directed to different entrances depending on the construction phase.
