A recent federal audit of the U.S. Postal Service mail handling centers in St. Louis, Missouri has uncovered problems resulting in delivery delays, lost packages and substandard service impacting southern Illinois.
12th District Republican U.S. Congressman Mike Bost had requested the audit after receiving numerous complaints from constituents in his district, including Lawrence County about mail being lost or not received. Bost says he is thankful that the issue has been addressed, and problems identified and now wants to see accountability.
The U.S. Inspector General's audit report included 12 recommendations to improve service at the locations. They include filling vacant positions in the centers, improving supervisor oversight and enforcing the proper handling of registered mail to help restore timely and reliable service.
The U.S. Postal Services has agreed to implement the recommendations by January of 2026.
