Plymouth’s Utility Superintendent Donnie Davidson was asked about the Garro Street drainage project during this week’s Board of Public Works and Safety meeting.
The city purchased the property that was for former Eagles Lodge, demolished the building and leveled the ground with plans to create a detention pond on the site.
This was the best alternative the city found to handle the flooding issues that have impacted the Marshall County Neighborhood Center the last few years. The storm water lines can’t handle the excessive amounts of water the city has experienced, and water has flooded into the Neighborhood Center causing extensive damage several times.
Davidson told the board they are waiting for the driest time of the season because the water table is so high. He said they hit water at 5-feet down. Davidson said they will use drain during construction to keep water from accumulating in the project.
The city utility superintendent previously stated that the detention will be dry most of the time and grass will be planted and the property will be maintained and mowed by the utility department. It will retain water after larger events and gradually let the water drain out.
