The final piece of funding needed to renovate the exterior of Plymouth's Historic Firehouse is now in place, after the Indiana Department of Natural Resources awarded a $75,000 federal grant for the long-planned project.
The Indiana DNR's Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology confirmed the grant award, which will support exterior renovation of the 1875 Fire House-City Hall building, located at the corner of Center and Washington Streets. The award represents the last funding component needed to complete the restoration of the landmark building's exterior.
The grant, funded through the federal Historic Preservation Fund and administered in Indiana by the DHPA in partnership with the National Park Service, will focus on rehabilitation of the building's tower cupola. The project includes shingle removal, decking repair, installation of new faux slate roofing, a new rubber membrane to seal the cupola floor, and repairs to woodwork and the tower's rose window.
The City of Plymouth has already been awarded $750,000 from the Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) grant to assist with rehabilitation of the exterior brick masonry.
The Historic Preservation Fund program supports preservation efforts across Indiana, helping communities protect and restore historically significant structures. All buildings receiving grants are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
The Historic Firehouse stands as a significant piece of Plymouth's heritage, and the renovation project aims to preserve the building's exterior for future generations while maintaining its historic character.
