The Vincennes City Council Monday took an initial step toward creating additional housing in the downtown area.
By a 6-1 vote, the council approved on first reading an ordinance that would authorize up to $6.5 million in economic development bonds for the planned Firehouse Flats development. The measure still requires additional approval before it will be officially enacted to assist in the financing of the multi-family residential apartment complex.
The 89-unit, 4-story market-rate structure would be constructed along Vigo Street between 3rd and 4th Streets by AP Construction and Development.
The council also gave final approval to the 2027 city salary ordinance, which sets the maximum pay levels for elected officials such as the mayor and the city clerk-treasurer and other city employees. There was a provision in the ordinance that would allow adjustments to those salaries if it is determined by the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance that the city budget be reduced.
