The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is urging Lawrence County residents to take proper precautions against the spread of the flu and other seasonal respiratory illnesses, as rates continue to climb across the state.

Flu activity has been rated as "Very High" in recent days by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In addition, COVID-19 rates in the state have climbed to "Moderate". Illinois has also reported its first influenza death in a child this season.

According to the latest IDPH statistics, only 21.9% of Illinoisians have received a flu shot this season, while only 6.8% have gotten a recent COVID-19 immunization. The most susceptible to respiratory illnesses are the very young, very old, pregnant women, and those who are immunocompromised or have underlying health conditions.

Basic precautions, like getting vaccinated, washing your hands and staying home when sick, can reduce the spread and help keep other people safe.
