Several juveniles were detained in Logansport Monday evening after a high speed chase that lasted around six minutes, reaching speeds of up to 120 mph and several vehicles being hit in the process.
It was reported that on Monday, Dec. 9, an off-duty Cass County sheriff's deputy attempted to stop a Nissan Altima that was seen speeding near County Road 475 East on U.S. 35 in Cass County. The driver of the car continued to accelerate and did not yield to the deputy's emergency lights, speeding away onto County Road 225 South, which is a dead-end road.
The driver eventually continued into a field before returning northbound on U.S. 35 and exiting onto Logansport's Main Street. Driving on several streets throughout the town, the driver soon lost control of the Altima and struck a parked car at the intersection of 14th and High Street. The parked vehicle also struck another nearby vehicle during the accident.
The driver, a juvenile, immediately fled from the scene, running to Riverside Park, where he eluded officers by escaping into the Eel River. Despite being unable to apprehend the driver. Three juvenile passengers that were in the car during the chase were successfully detained and cooperated with officers in the investigation. The juvenile passengers were all released to family members at the scene.
The driver was identified by the passengers, but none of the juveniles have been publicly identified due to their ages. The Logansport Police Department and Walton Police Department assisted the Cass County Sheriff's Department and the incident is still under investigation. Any possible criminal charges will be referred to the Cass County Prosecutor's Office.
