Indiana launches “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” blitz ahead of Labor Day

The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) is partnering with local law enforcement agencies across the state to prevent impaired driving and save lives.

From August 16 through August 30, officers will increase patrols and conduct sobriety checkpoints as part of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over national enforcement campaign, led by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In 2024, nearly 14% of all traffic fatalities in Indiana involved alcohol, while more than 35% involved drug impairment, according to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).

“If you are impaired, whether from alcohol, drugs, or even medication, you should not be behind the wheel,” said Douglas Huntsinger, executive director of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute. “As we head into the final stretch of summer, we’re urging Hoosiers to make the responsible choice and plan ahead for a safe, sober ride.”

To encourage safe travel during the Labor Day weekend, Sober Ride Indiana, a program of ICJI, is offering $10 off Uber and Lyft rides August 29 through September 2. Up to 1,000 free credits are available each day and are valid for rides between 5 p.m. and 3 a.m. that begin or end in Indianapolis or Fort Wayne.

To redeem a ride credit, visit SoberRideIndiana.com and click “Redeem Ride Credits.” Follow the instructions for the selected rideshare service. Tips are not included in the discount, and users are responsible for any charges exceeding $10. Sober Rides cannot be reserved, and a pickup cannot be scheduled in advance. Possession of the code does not guarantee availability. Credits are available while supplies last and will reset each day.

ICJI created Sober Ride Indiana in 2020 to combat impaired driving, particularly around high-risk holidays and events. The program is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
