Cooling centers available in Vincennes during extreme heat

With dangerously high temperatures affecting the area, several organizations throughout Vincennes are opening their doors to provide residents with a safe, air-conditioned place to cool off.

Community members who need relief from the heat are encouraged to visit one of the following cooling centers during their normal operating hours:

  • First City Sunrise Shelter
  • Vincennes Public Library
  • STOA
  • Thursday Church
  • Margaret Compton Center

Extreme heat can be dangerous, especially for older adults, young children, individuals with chronic medical conditions, and those without reliable air conditioning. Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, and check on neighbors, friends, and family members who may be at greater risk.

If you are looking for additional cooling centers or other community resources, call Indiana 2-1-1. Community Navigators can provide up-to-date information on cooling center locations, hours of operation, utility assistance, food resources, and other available services. Residents can dial 2-1-1 or 1-866-211-9966 for assistance. Indiana 211 also provides information online.

United Way of Knox County encourages everyone to take the heat seriously and make a plan to stay safe.
