Board of Works updated on local construction projects

The City of Shelbyville moved one step closer to dealing with an unsafe building at 332 W. Taylor St.

Not only is the building dilapidated but individuals are living on the front porch of the vacated structure.

The Board of Public Works and Safety held a public hearing Tuesday morning at City Hall.

The city can now force the individuals to vacate the property.

In other board business Tuesday, city engineer Tyler Comstock provided updates on three construction projects.

Demolition will begin today on the dilapidated buildings along Broadway (photo) where it connects with Harrison St. There is no timetable for the completion of the demolition project.

“I think it’s going to be a few weeks,” said Comstock. “A large chunk of it will go fast and then up next to the existing buildings to remain, I keep calling that surgical demo because it’s by hand. That could take some time, given the age of the building and how its connected. We won’t know until we get into it.”

The roundabout at the intersection of Miller St. and McKay Road at Shelbyville High School is on track for completion before the start of the school year in August.

“You should start seeing pavement before too long,” said Comstock.

The first of two roundabouts along N. Riley Highway is progressing well.

The west side of the roundabout is nearly set and the traffic pattern will be shifted as soon as next week to start working on the east side in front of the Knauf entrance.
