Board of Public Works & Safety approve requests

The Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety approved two requests at their meeting last week.

Dr. Naomi Adame, Vice President of the Board of Directors for Dustin’s Place attended the meeting seeking approval to use a few of the city’s streets for the 5th annual Join the Journey 5K and Family Fun Run on May 4th.

This year’s event will begin and end at their facility behind the Plymouth Community Church on Lincoln Highway east of Plymouth. Dustin’s Place will be using the same route as in the past, leaving the facility and heading west into Plymouth on Lincoln Highway. Runners will travel on to Pennsylvania Avenue, north on Liberty Street and then back east on LaPorte Street. They will head south on Kingston Avenue and back onto Pennsylvania Avenue as runners will head back east towards Dustin’s Place. Once they get back to the church runners will go into McQueen’s Addition to finish the route.

Reserve officers with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department will assist with the safety of runners and volunteers will help in town at the intersections.

The theme of this year’s event is Star Wars “May the Fourth be with you” and begins at 9 a.m. with the Family Fun Run at 9:15. Early registration for the 5K is $30 and $25 for the Fun Run until April 1st. Breakfast will be served following the races along with an awards ceremony.

All proceeds from the event will go to Dustin's Place, a center for grieving children, teens, and their families to come together in their grief journey and walk with others so that no one grieves alone.

Grieving families can purchase a sign with their loved one's picture, name, and a verse or phrase on it. These signs will line the race route and allow all to remember why they have Joined the Journey!

The second request was from Jo Fisher, representing the Ben Fisher Memorial Foundation. She was granted approval to post corrugated ribbons on the green light poles on north and south Michigan Streets in recognition of Work Zone Awareness Week in April. She will again place banners on the downtown light poles and on the light poles in River Park Square during the month of April also.
