M.C. Sheriff Matt Hassel shares immigration letter from Indiana Sheriff's Association

On Tuesday afternoon, Marshall County Sheriff Matt Hassel shared a letter from the Indiana Sheriffs Association with the local media regarding their position on the current immigration operations.

The letter reads:

The Indiana Sheriff’s Association continues to closely monitor legislation in front of the Indiana General Assembly related to immigration issues. As our organization continues to gather information and meet with key individuals on a state and federal level, we would continue to encourage caution. The federal government is in the mix of improving processes and cleaning up operations. Taking any course of action on a state level, getting too far out ahead of what the federal government is doing now, and in the future could lead to negative consequences. 

We would encourage those on a state level to continue their trust in their County Sheriff, who has been cooperating with ICE and the federal government on immigration issues for decades.  Frustrations and anger at the inaction of the federal government on immigration issues are understandable.  We would encourage a collaborative pragmatic approach on how state policy can enhance what the federal government plans to do. 

As always, we want to continue the conversation on the issue, be a resource to our state leaders, and find a common ground on good policy.

Stephen Luce, Executive Director of the Indiana Sheriff’s Association, and Sheriff Robert Goldsmith, President of the Indiana Sheriff’s Association, signed the letter.    

In the email from Marshall County Sheriff Matt Hassel, he said, “As your Sheriff, I support the ISA's position stated in this letter.”
