Koch named new Shelbyville Police Chief

The City of Shelbyville has announced the appointment of Louie Koch as the next Chief of the Shelbyville Police Department.

A lifelong resident of Shelby County, Koch brings more than 27 years of law enforcement experience to the position, including service with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

”As a lifelong resident of Shelby County, I have dedicated my life to serving and protecting this community,” said Koch. “For 27 years, I served in law enforcement, including two terms as your elected Sheriff. Those years taught me the value of leadership, accountability, and working side-by-side with the people who call this county home.”

Koch said his connection to the community extends beyond his professional role.

”I’ve remained active in our community, supporting local initiatives, engaging with families, and working to strengthen the place we all love,” said Koch.

“He has spent nearly three decades serving the people of Shelby County with integrity and dedication,” said Shelbyville Mayor Scott Furgeson. “He understands the responsibility of the role and the importance of building a department culture focused on professionalism, accountability, and community trust. His experience and leadership will serve Shelbyville well.”

Koch said one of his priorities as chief will be strengthening the department through recruitment and retention.

”We have several retirements coming up and currently have open positions,” said Koch. “Recruitment and retention will be a key focus right away. That means bringing in strong candidates, supporting the officers we already have, and making sure we are prepared for the future.”

Koch said he was initially surprised when Furgeson approached him about the position.

”When the mayor asked me to meet, I honestly thought he was looking for input on potential candidates or advice on the selection process,” said Koch. “I didn’t expect to be considered for the role, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue to serve this community in a new way.”

Koch will officially begin his duties as Chief of Police on March 23.
