Driver arrested for being suspended and driving with broken head light & no tail lights

A Plymouth Police Officer stopped a vehicle with one headlight out and no rear lights on Monday, July 18^th at 12:45 a.m. in the 500 block of West Harrison Street.

Sergeant Taberski was on routine patrol and observed the vehicle northbound on Michigan Street from Jefferson Street with only its driver-side headlight illuminated.  As the vehicle passed him, he saw that the vehicle did not have any of its rear lights illuminated.

The vehicle then turned west on Harrison Street and as the officer caught up to it the driver turned on his rear lights.  The vehicle still did not have an illuminated passenger-side headlamp or a rear license plate light, so he initiated a traffic stop. 

The driver Alberto Villegas-Leanos, 26, of Kingston Road in Plymouth stated that he did not have a valid driver's license.  A check showed his status as suspended/prior.  The vehicle also emitted a strong odor of marijuana and suspected marijuana was located inside the vehicle. 

Villegas-Leanos was placed under arrest and transported to the Marshall County Jail.  He was booked in for driving while suspended with a prior and possession of marijuana and held on a $500 cash bond.    

 Readers are reminded that charging information supported by an affidavit of probable cause is a mere allegation that a crime has been committed and that there is only probable cause to believe a crime has been committed. They are presumed innocent throughout the proceedings and are entitled to be represented by counsel and entitled to a trial by jury at which the State is obligated to provide proof beyond a reasonable doubt before a judgment of guilt may be made.
