A South Bend man is facing new charges after he escaped from a Marshall County courtroom immediately following his sentencing on Tuesday morning, leading police on a brief foot pursuit through the city.
At approximately 11:40 a.m. on Tuesday, March 31, the Plymouth Police Department was notified that a male subject had fled from Marshall Superior Court III. The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Bruno J. Cataldo of South Bend, ran from the courthouse on foot just after a judge sentenced him for trafficking with an inmate and operating a vehicle while intoxicated - endangerment.
Following the alert, Plymouth Police Patrolman Thornton began canvassing the area and spotted Cataldo walking through the front yard of a residence on North Michigan Street. When the officer announced his presence and identified himself, Cataldo once again fled on foot, prompting a chase.
During the pursuit, officers deployed department-issued Tasers to successfully subdue the suspect. Cataldo was ultimately taken into custody in an alleyway located between Michigan and Center Streets.
Following his capture, Cataldo was immediately transported and lodged in the Marshall County Jail to serve his original sentence. As a result of the escape, he now faces an additional charge of resisting law enforcement. A judge has set his bond for the new charge at $750.
Readers are reminded that all criminal suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
