Milroy pallet facility destroyed by Tuesday fire

Fire departments from five counties converged to fight a major fire at the Milroy pallet factory Tuesday.

Anderson Township Volunteer Fire Department was the primary of the 19 departments from Rush, Shelby, Ripley, Franklin and Decatur counties. Initial reports indicate that a pallet shredding machine may have been the origin of the fire at the facility at 4126 W 900 South, Milroy.

Crews arrived at the scene about noon and were on scene until after 7 p.m. Tankers went as far away as North Decatur High School to refill. The Milroy and Rushville water twoers were drained at one point.

The facility is listed as a total loss but fire crews were able to save a house and shed located nearby.

There are reports of smoke sightings as much as 25 miles away.
