The city of Lawrenceville is moving forward toward the building of its proposed new sewer plant.
The city council moved Thursday night to increase the sewer rates in the future. Mayor David Courtney told GIANT-FM News that the move was necessary in order to help finance the new facility to be located on the old Lawrenceville High School property. He indicated that rates for residents would increase roughly $15 per month. It is the first substantial raise in the rates since 2007. The rates must be enough to allow the city to obtain government funding and continue to maintain the site in future years.
The council also approved a contract with the engineering firm of HMG based in Breese, Illinois to handle the planning and engineering of the new plant. The firm had been used by the city previously to locate a suitable site and did recommend the former high school property, now owned by the city. It is hoped that plans will be formulated by 2028 and construction will begin in 2030.
