The Shelbyville Common Council will host a special session meeting where it will deliver a presentation on the creation of a 1% food and beverage tax and the potential for renovation of the vacant Methodist Building (photo) in downtown Shelbyville.
Shelbyville Mayor Scott Furgeson stated Monday the meeting will take place on Sept. 15 at 5 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall, 44 W. Washington St.
The regularly scheduled council meeting will follow at 6 p.m.
The council also approved a salary ordinance Monday that will give city employees a 2% pay raise in 2026. That pay increase will not include firefighters who received a 10% pay raise in its most recent two-year contract signed in 2024.
“We did give the police department 13.2% last year and the agreement with the fire department was to give them 10% this year,” said Furgeson. “Even though the budget numbers are tight and cramped, we lived up to our promise and Mr. (Scott) Asher found a way to get it done.”
Asher is the city’s clerk-treasurer.
