A Plymouth man faces a marijuana possession charge following a traffic stop Tuesday evening on the city's south side.

Patrolman Thornton with the Plymouth Police Department initiated a traffic stop at Lake Avenue and Oak Drive at approximately 6:30 p.m. on December 23 after observing a black passenger car traveling at excessive speed. A license plate check also revealed the vehicle's registration had expired.

During the stop, the officer observed suspected marijuana in plain view inside the vehicle while speaking with the driver, Nicholas Randall Grout, 26, of Plymouth.

Grout was transported to the Marshall County Jail, where he was booked on a preliminary charge of possession of marijuana.

Readers are reminded that charging information supported by an affidavit of probable cause is a mere allegation that a crime has been committed and that there is only probable cause to believe a crime has been committed. They are presumed innocent throughout the proceedings and are entitled to be represented by counsel and entitled to a trial by jury at which the State is obligated to provide proof beyond a reasonable doubt before a judgment of guilt may be made.
