DCS highlights the importance of child support and services offered to help families thrive

August is Child Support Awareness Month, recognized in Indiana and across the nation. Child support provides crucial financial support for children by providing necessities such as food, clothing, housing, healthcare, education and other expenses necessary for a child’s well-being. 

To recognize the importance of the month, Governor Mike Braun has proclaimed this month as Child Support Awareness Month. Read the proclamation here. 

The Indiana child support program is administered by the Child Support Bureau of the Indiana Department of Child Services and is carried out in partnership by the local prosecutor and clerk of each county. The program serves more than 200,000 families and provides services such as:

• Paternity establishment
• Child support establishment
• Child support enforcement
• Medical/health insurance order establishment

“The Indiana Child Support Bureau is an important piece of how DCS serves and helps support Hoosier families and children,” DCS Director Adam Krupp said. “This month is a chance to educate and remind the public that these services exist and that DCS is here to offer support in a variety of ways.” 

In the Federal Fiscal Year 2024, $498 million was distributed to Hoosier families through monthly child support payments.

“Child support is more than just a financial obligation, it’s a commitment to the well-being and future of our children,” said Indiana Child Support Bureau Director Adam Norman. “During Child Support Awareness Month, we recognize the dedicated families, professionals and partners across Indiana who work tirelessly to ensure children receive the support they deserve. Together, we’re building stronger families, brighter futures and a more connected community.”
