On Tuesday morning a fire hydrant on Wabash Avenue in Rochester was accidentally damaged, causing a significant disruption within the city’s water distribution system.
Residents in the Wabash Avenue area, as well as potentially other areas throughout the Rochester, may experience discolored water, low water pressure, or temporary loss of water service while repairs are underway. Due to the direction water moves through the distribution system, impacts may extend beyond the immediate area of the incident.
City officials want residents to know that while discolored water can appear concerning, it is typically the result of naturally occurring sediment being stirred within water mains as flow patterns change during a major water system event. This is a common occurrence following hydrant or water main issues.
Residents experiencing discoloration are encouraged to run an outdoor hose or cold water spigot for a short period of time to help clear the lines and pull discolored water away from their homes. As a precaution, residents are also advised to avoid washing light-colored laundry until the system has stabilized and water clarity returns to normal.
The City noted in the release that it appreciates the public’s patience and understanding as crews continue working to restore normal service conditions.
