The game between Connersville and Shelbyville started with a strikeout. Then chaos took over.
The visiting Spartans scored eight runs in the second inning and built a 17-7 lead going to the bottom of the fourth – then Shelbyville scored 17 runs … in that inning … to take a 24-17 lead.
Gracie Crafton stepped into the circle for the Golden Bears in the seventh and made quick work of the Spartans to finally seal a 27-23 victory that improved Shelbyville to 7-6.
June Murdick (4-0) got the start and earned the win thanks to that 17-run inning. She pitched into the fifth inning before Sydney Brown secured the next four outs to set up Crafton for the finale.
The two teams combined for 50 runs, 47 hits, and 16 errors (10 by Connersville).
Kourtni Carpenter was Connersville’s toughest out, getting five hits, including the game’s only home run, and driving in five runs.
Hailey Maulden and Addison Wooten each had four hits for Shelbyville. Maulden had two doubles and scored four times. Wooten had three RBIs and scored three runs.
Crafton had three hits and two RBIs. Brown had two doubles.
Murdick, Crafton and Herald each stepped to the plate three times in the extended fourth inning. Ten different Golden Bears scored a run in the win.
Shelbyville is at Franklin (8-1) Thursday.

Jac-Cen-Del 12, Waldron 2
At Jac-Cen-Del, the host Eagles scored nine runs in the fifth and sixth innings to pull away from the Mohawks (4-4).
Neil Sullivan and Will Meyer each had three hits for Jac-Cen-Del (6-3). Meyer also had a team-high three RBIs.
Blake Wagner and Sam Johnson combined to limit Waldron to six hits and two walks.
Hunter Dodson took the loss for Waldron, pitching 3.2 innings, allowing seven hits and four walks while striking out six. Dodson had a double and drove in both runs.
Triton Central 15, Speedway 8
At Triton Central, the host Tigers trailed 3-0 and 7-1 before getting the offense in gear to defeat the Sparkplugs.
Ty Bergman had four hits, including three doubles, scored four runs and drove in two to lead Triton Central (3-6, 2-3 Hoosier Legends Conference). Brody Hartman had three hits and two RBIs. Weston Smith delivered a solo home run.
Janssen Capps went the distance for the Tigers, allowing eight hits and eight runs (five earned) while striking out seven.
Gage Beiswinger had two home runs and four RBIs for Speedway (3-9, 0-6 HLC).
Softball
Triton Central 14, Speedway 4
At Triton Central, the host Tigers scored three runs in each of the first three innings to secure the HLC victory.
Elly May had a double, a home run and four RBIs to lead Triton Central (5-4, 4-1 HLC). Kimiko Keith had two hits, scored three runs and drove in two.
Marissa Williams pitched into the fifth inning, allowing five hits and four runs. Madi Peterson secured the final out to complete the win.
Hagerstown 17, Morristown 0
At Morristown, Chloe Jessee and Payton Cones combined to no-hit the Yellow Jackets over five innings. The sophomore and freshman, respectively, combined for 10 strikeouts and one walk.
Aaliya Anderson had two hits and three RBIs for Class 2A, No. 5 Hagerstown (7-1).
Morristown dropped to 3-5 this season.
Girls tennis
Waldron 4, Edinburgh 1
At Waldron, the doubles pairings of Emerson Lindsey and Jackie Corlett (No. 1 doubles) and Madeline Walker and Hannah Rouse (No. 2 doubles) lost just four games combined in sweeping their matches.
At No. 1 singles, Waldron’s Riley Thurston defeated Lucy Buck, 6-1, 6-1. Ava Leising won via forfeit at No. 2 singles.
Edinburgh’s Kinzie Purvis needed three sets to defeat Malia Murphy at No. 3 singles, 4-6, 6-4, 10-5.
Waldron improved to 6-1 this season and 3-0 in the Mid-Hoosier Conference standings.
Triton Central 4, Eastern Hancock 1
At Triton Central, the host Tigers won both doubles matches in straight sets and added two singles victories to defeat the Royals.
At No. 1 doubles, Kate Collier and Neve Kahler defeated Sophie Hardin and Bristol Maxwell, 6-3, 6-4.
Estelle Gearlds and Ellie Gast produced a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 2 doubles over Megan Fox and Londyn Brown.
Triton Central’s Anniston Evans blanked Roxie Maxwell at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
And Zhibek Zhumaly topped Ryliegh Philhower at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-3.
Eastern Hancock’s lone win came at No. 1 singles where Lexi Fletcher defeated Maryrose Felling, 6-3, 6-3.
Boys track and field
Shelbyville 76, Rushville 72, Southwestern 18
At Rushville, the Golden Bears won five individual events and two of the three relay races to secure the team victory over the Lions and Spartans.
Shia Veach won the 800 meters (2:15.81) and 1,600 (5:00.65). Joaquin Delgado took first place in the 110 hurdles (17.31) and 300 hurdles (46.41). Eli Davis cleared 5-6 to win the high jump event.
The quartet of Anderson Mollenkopf, Jonathan Roell, Ethan Pritchett and Iran Daza won the 3,200 relay in 10:06.37.
Josue Isaac, Trell Garner, Bryson Pierce and Shane Owens crossed the finish line first in the 1,600 relay (3:49.83).
Southwestern had runner-up finishes from Will Stamper (20.14 in 110 hurdles; 47.8 in 300 hurdles), Dusty Stevens (57.0 in 400) and the 1,600 relay team of Bruce O’Brien, Ethan Sipes, Landon Drake and Stevens (3:50.25).
Girls track and field
Shelbyville 100, Rushville 52, Southwestern 4
At Rushville, 11 different Golden Bears won an individual event.
Wura Ogunmoyela won the 100 (13.97) and 200 (28.81); Sonora O’Connor took first in the 400 (1:04.12); Macey Robbins was first in the 800 (2:32.51); America Leon was fastest in the 1,600 (6:08.43); Aerin Garcia-Santiago won the 3,200 (13:15.42); Jordyn Noe earned first-place points in the 100 hurdles (18.43); and Makaila Hungate won the 300 hurdles (59.04).
In the field events, Mary O’Connor cleared 4-6 to win the high jump; Haylee Barnes set a new personal record of 8-0 to win the pole vault; Taylor Abell had the best throw in the shot put (28-1); and Madalyn Bolin won the discus (84-0).
Shelbyville won the 400 relay in 53.78 with Mary O’Connor, Diana Gasca, Ogunmoyela, and Amlan N’Taye.
Southwestern’s best results came from Ashlynn Wadsworth (fourth in shot put and discus) and Kyndra King (fourth in 800).
Boys volleyball
Columbus East def. Shelbyville, 25-21, 25-14, 25-11
At Columbus East, Jay Kawakami led the visiting Golden Bears (1-17) with 10 kills and 10 digs.
Jack Bassett finished with six kills and 14 digs. Harlyn Feathers collected 18 assists.
