Prep Report: Martzall, Thoman lead Golden Bears baseball to 6-0 start

Class 3A, No. 9 Shelbyville scored five runs in the final two innings to earn a 7-3 win Friday at Indian Creek (3-5).

Austin Martzall and Cooper Thoman combined to limit the Braves to five hits and five walks while amassing 12 strikeouts.

Martzall earned the win with 3.1 innings of relief. He allowed three hits and no walks and struck out six. Thoman pitched into the fourth inning, allowing two hits and five walks while striking out six.

Aiden Smith had two hits and scored two runs. Gavin Reed and Reece Prickett each drove in two runs to improve the Golden Bears to 6-0 this season.

Shelbyville hosts Pendleton Heights (5-3) Tuesday in the first of two Hoosier Heritage Conference games with the Arabians.

Baseball

Waldron 11, Indiana Deaf 1

At Waldron, Hunter Dodson pitched a three-hitter and struck out 10 to improve the Mohawks to 4-2 this season.

Jackson Kuhn had three hits and scored three runs for Waldron. Kevin Crouch and Nathan Stocklin combined to drive in five runs and J.D. Smith had two hits, including a triple.

Ian Fetzer had all three hits for the Orioles (1-5).

Waldron hosts Bethesda Christian (4-3) today.

Eastern Hancock 8, Triton Central 1

At Eastern Hancock, the Royals scored four runs in the second inning and added four more in the sixth to defeat the Tigers.

Caleb Retherford, Hayden Rouse and Kolt Wilson each drove in two runs for Eastern Hancock (4-1). Rouse also pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and three walks while striking out four.

Kellan Dishman had three hits for Triton Central (1-6).

The Tigers host North Decatur (4-3) today.

Softball

Shelbyville 7, Delta 6, 8 innings

At Delta, the visiting Golden Bears scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to take the lead, but Delta tied the game in the home half of the inning.

In its second extra-inning game of the week, Shelbyville pushed a run across the plate in the eighth and held the Eagles scoreless to preserve the HHC victory.

Gracie Crafton earned the win in relief of starter Sydney Brown. Crafton (3-4) pitched five innings, allowed three hits and struck out six to push the Golden Bears’ record to 6-5 (2-1 HHC).

Reagan Dillon had three hits. Anna Newhouse and Addison Herald each had two hits. Lexi Rogers had a solo home run, her fifth of the season.

Shelbyville is at Greenwood (8-2) today.

Track and field

Bill Self Invitational

Shelbyville girls finished third overall powered by strong relay performances and the individual effort of Sonora O’Connor.

O’Connor won the 300-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 46.88 seconds. She also won the long jump (15 feet, 10.5 inches) and placed third in the 200 meters (27.61) and 100 hurdles (17.58).

Macey Robbins won the 800 in 2:25.64. Jordyn Noe finished runner-up in the high jump (5-3) and Amara Lewis finished third in the 100 (13.47).

The Golden Bears produced runner-up finishes in all three relay events.

In the 400 relay, Lewis teamed with Mary O’Connor, Diana Gasca and Wura Ogunmoyela to finish in 51.94.

Noe, Mary O’Connor and Robbins teamed with Alyna Castanon to finish second in the 1,600 relay in 4:14.2.

In the 3,200 relay, Castanon and Robbins ran with Aeria Garcia-Santiago and America Leon to finish second in 10:32.05.

Ethan Griffin and Shia Veach produced standout performances for Shelbyville’s boys track and field team.

Griffin won the discus with a best throw of 133-0. He finished runner-up in the shot put at 46-7.25.

Veach finished second in the 3,200 (9:48.86).

Knightstown Invitational

Morristown’s girls program won the 9-team invitational with 148 points. North Decatur was runner-up at 102. Waldron finished sixth.

Individual event winners for Morristown were Anita Gesuale (1:04.86 in 400), Sawyer Rogers (16.94 in 100 hurdles) and Brooklyn Carlton (49.64 in 300 hurdles).

Morristown also won the 1,600 relay and the 3,200 relay.

Scoring runner-up points were Gesuale (28.66 in 200), Chloe Theobald (14-10 in long jump; 1:05.83 in 400), Ava Smith (2:47.25 in 800), and Carlton (17.17 in 100 hurdles).

Waldron’s Maleah Williams won both the discus (131-8) and the shot put (39-0.5).

Morristown was second in the boys meet. Shenandoah defeated the Yellow Jackets, 106-88. Waldron finished seventh.

Waldron’s Tad Crosby won the 400 in 52.26 and finished third in the 200 (23.7). Luke Meyers finished third in the discus (122-4) and shot put (42-0.5).

Morristown’s Colston Allford took first place in the high jump (6-3). Brayden Anderson was runner-up in the 400 (54.31) and Arik Trattner was runner-up in the long jump (20-3).

Park Tudor Showcase

Triton Central finished seventh out of 13 teams at the showcase.

Senior Zeke Robertson finished runner-up in the 300 hurdles in 39.42.

Robertson teamed with Braden Brown, Judea Holt and Landon Slone to finish second in the 800 SMR (1:38.62).

Triton Central’s girls team finished tied for eighth.

The 400 relay team of Kaylynn Tremblett, Ryn West, Farah Coen and Layla Compton placed second in the 400 relay (52.65).

Tremblett, Compton, West and Aubrie Propp finished third in the 800 SMR (1:58.3).
