This weekend, Plymouth, Indiana isn’t just a city… it’s the Berry Capital of the Known Universe. If you thought you were coming here for “a few booths and maybe a slice of pie,” think again. The Marshall County Blueberry Festival is basically what would happen if Willy Wonka married Martha Stewart and they raised their kids in a small Midwestern town.
Let’s start with the donuts. Thousands of blueberry donuts fly out of the fryer so fast that if you blink, you’ll miss them. People set alarms like they’re trying to buy concert tickets. Don’t laugh—you’ll be the one standing in line at 6:30 a.m. begging a stranger to “just sell me two, please.”
Then there’s Hank the Blueberry. He’s big, he’s round, he’s smiling, and he looks suspiciously like the blueberry kid from Willy Wonka who never deflated. He was created in a drawing contest back in the ’70s, which proves that sometimes the best ideas come from bored art teachers with a sense of humor.
Oh, and nearly half a million people are expected. HALF. A. MILLION. That means for four glorious days, Plymouth’s population is basically the size of Chicago… if Chicago was obsessed with blueberries, shuffleboard, and funnel cakes.
You think you’ll just “stop by for an hour?” Cute. That’s what everyone says. Next thing you know you’ve entered the Blueberry Stomp race, bought a handcrafted birdhouse, eaten three slices of blueberry cheesecake, and somehow agreed to let your kids ride carnival rides until their fingerprints are permanently sticky.
And just when you think it’s over? Boom—fireworks. Balloons. Drones. The only thing missing is NASA calling to ask if they can borrow Plymouth’s launch pad.
So bring your stretchy pants, bring your sweet tooth, and for the love of all things berry—bring cash for donuts.
