Shelby County’s first artificial intelligence-powered “caregiver,” Robin the Robot, joined the healthcare team at Waldron Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center.
Designed as a technology companion focused on socialization, Robin engages residents by providing music therapy, telling jokes, reading, and more.
The community met Robin at an open house on Tuesday at Waldron Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center in Waldron. The event included the debut of Robin the Robot, and tours of the facility, including its specialized therapy areas, state-of-the-art technology, common areas, and amenities.
Remarks were made by Shelbyville Mayor Scott Furgeson, Waldron Rehabilitation Executive Director Nicole Cherry and Castle Healthcare CEO Shai Berdugo.

Waldron Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center is a 71-bed skilled nursing facility, which provides essential long- and short-term rehabilitative services and state-of-the-art care to the community.
Standing at just under four feet tall with a big, friendly screen/face, the robo-pal is designed as the first emotionally intelligent robot, recognized for its ability to provide meaningful personalized and therapeutic care, and has won numerous industry awards, including Time magazine's Best Invention of 2021.
Robin stands out compared to other assistive robots, according to Karen Khachikyan, founder of Los Angeles-based Expper Technologies and the robot’s creator.
“Robin offers a range of therapeutic activities designed to support both the emotional and physical well-being of patients,” Khachikyan said. “While other robots may offer useful functions, Robin's unique capacity to form empathetic connections and deliver tailored interactions sets it apart.”
“Robin is truly a revolutionary step in healthcare,” said Nicole Cherry, Executive Director of Waldron Rehab. “Every day we provide therapy for residents who are bed-bound or isolated by choice. Robin is meant to build bonds with residents and improve their emotional well-being. Initially, we will be trialing Robin with Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia patients and eventually expanding its scope.”
Waldron Rehabilitation Executive Director Nicole Cherry says they've been anxiously awaiting Robin's arrival.
Cherry explains why she believes Robin will be a difference maker.
Castle Healthcare CEO Shai Berdugo says Robin is not a replacement for staff at Waldron Healthcare.
The need for a variety of emotional and mental health support within facilities is what motivated Khachikyan to develop Robin. His mission was to improve patient well-being and support healthcare providers.
“Robin was created to offer comfort, companionship, emotional support, and therapeutic care, enhancing the patient experience and addressing the holistic needs of individuals in healthcare settings,” he said.

Long term, Robin has the potential to revolutionize the delivery of quality care worldwide by significantly enhancing mental health support, according to Khachikyan. “By providing consistent and empathetic therapeutic care, Robin can greatly improve mental health outcomes for patients, leading to faster recovery times and a more positive overall healthcare experience.”
