Police have identified the man killed in a fiery single-vehicle crash in St. Joesph County Saturday morning as Joseph Rush, 40, of Starke County.
According to reports, the accident happened just after 12 a.m. Saturday Aug. 30, near the intersection of Kern and Fir Roads. When police first arrived to the scene they originally reported the driver had exited the vehicle and refused medical treatment. Moments later, however, dispatchers were advised that the vehicle was engulfed in flames and that the driver was still inside.
Live electrical wires that had fallen into the vehicle prevented first responders from approaching the vehicle at that time and emergency crew were forced to wait the downed lines could be secured. Rush was eventually discovered inside the car and was found to be deceased at the scene. He had been the sole occupant inside the vehicle.
The cause of the crash has yet to be determined and is still under investigation.
