Rush County child drowned in basement of residence

On Wednesday at approximately 7:30 p.m., the Rush County Sheriff’s Dispatch Center received a report of a two-year-old child who had drowned in the basement of a residence.

Rush County, like many other areas of the state, experienced historic flooding in the area. As emergency personnel responded, they encountered roadways that were impassable in several locations, and the residence was surrounded by deep water.

A nearby farmer responded with a tractor and assisted emergency personnel in reaching the residence. The farmer also helped transport the child and the remaining family members to safety.

Life-saving measures were administered by the child’s mother and responding medical personnel. The child was subsequently airlifted by Stat Flight to an Indianapolis hospital for further treatment.

Responding agencies included the Raleigh Volunteer Fire Department, Rushville Fire Department EMS, Stat Flight, and the Rush County Sheriff’s Office.

The Rush County Sheriff’s Office also extends its appreciation to the local farmer who immediately stepped in to assist emergency personnel and the family during the flooding.

Detective Randy M. Meek, who assisted with the investigation, said, “This is a tragic situation. Our thoughts are with the child and the family. We also appreciate the quick response from emergency personnel and the local farmer who helped reach the residence during the flooding.”

The Rush County Sheriff’s Office investigated the incident. At this time, all indications are that the incident was a tragic accident.

The Rush County Sheriff’s Office continues to offer its prayers and support to the family and hopes the child makes a full and speedy recovery.
