Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has signed legislation that is aimed at helping Lawrence County and other farmers and landowners across the state deal with nuisance wildlife issues involving deer-related crop damage.

The new law gives the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (INDR) authority to issue deer removal permits out of season based on the percentage of deer harvested in an area under previous permits. Farmers and landowners will also have more flexible ways to manage nuisance wildlife which destroy crops.

The bill has the backing of the Illinois Farm Bureau, which issued a statement praising the passage saying it will bring much-needed relief to farmers on the long-standing issue. The newly updates rules for the deer removal permitting by the INDR covering the application procedures, damage reporting and evaluation guidelines will not go into effect until January 1st, 2026.
